Biology syllabus.

Biology carries more content than any other ATAR science and gives you the least room to guess: nearly every mark is awarded for naming the right structure and then saying what it does. Every board builds the course from the same four strands — cells, heredity, the internal environment, and ecosystems and evolution — and every board examines them with extended responses that reward a causal chain, not a definition.

HSC · NESAYear 11 Modules 1–4 (Cells as the Basis of Life, Organisation of Living Things, Biological Diversity, Ecosystem Dynamics), then Year 12 Modules 5–8 (Heredity, Genetic Change, Infectious Disease, Non-infectious Disease and Disorders), with a depth study in each year.
VCE · VCAAUnits 1–4. Unit 3 asks how cells maintain life and Unit 4 how life changes and responds to challenges; a student-designed scientific investigation is assessed in Unit 4.
WACE · SCSAUnits 1 and 2 in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12. The ATAR mark is half school assessment and half a written SCSA examination of short and extended responses.
QCE · QCAAUnits 1–4, assessed by a data test, a student experiment and a research investigation, plus an external examination worth 50 per cent.
SACE BoardStage 2 is 70 per cent school assessment — an investigations folio and skills and applications tasks — and a 30 per cent external examination.

Thermoreceptors in the skin detect that the body is too hot and send a message to the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus then causes sweating and vasodilation, so heat is lost from the skin and the body cools down again.

How to improve

Where the marks usually go: Nearly every lost mark in a homeostasis question is the same one — the answer describes the response but never closes the feedback loop.

Three mistakes that cost Biology marks every year

Naming a structure without saying what it does. “Memory cells respond” earns nothing until you say they produce antibodies faster and in greater quantity.
Writing that an organism “adapts” or “develops” a trait. That describes Lamarckian change and is marked wrong even when the rest of the answer is right.
Answering a six-mark extended response in four sentences. The mark scheme wants a causal chain and every link in it is a separate mark.
