Literature is the close-reading course: fewer texts, read harder. Where English asks what a text says, Literature asks how it is made and what readings it permits — which means the marks go to interpretation supported by the text's own language, and to an awareness that another reading is possible.

How to improve

Where the marks usually go: Form is named and then abandoned. The mark that lifts a Literature response is the one connecting a formal feature to the poem as a whole.

Three mistakes that cost Literature marks every year
