English syllabus.

English is the one subject nearly every ATAR student sits, and the one where the marks are least about knowing things. Every board is assessing the same three moves: reading a text closely, arguing a position about it, and writing for a stated purpose and audience. What changes between boards is the wording of the task, not the skill underneath it.

WACE · SCSAUnits 1 and 2 in Year 11 and Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with a SCSA examination made up of comprehending, responding and composing sections.
VCE · VCAAUnits 1–4, including analytical and creative responses to texts and an analysis of argument and language in persuasive media, plus an end-of-year examination.
QCE · QCAAUnits 1–4 with internal assessments across analytical, persuasive and imaginative writing, plus a 25 per cent external examination.
SACE BoardStage 2 is 70 per cent school assessment — responding to texts and creating texts — and a 30 per cent external comparative analysis or investigation.

How to improve

Where the marks usually go: One effect stretched across several techniques is the most common way to cap an English response in the middle band.

Three mistakes that cost English marks every year

Identifying a technique and stopping. The mark is for the effect on the reader, and each technique needs its own effect rather than one blanket claim.
Retelling the plot instead of analysing it. If a sentence would make sense to someone who had not read the question, it is summary rather than analysis.
Writing an introduction with no contention. Examiners look for a position in the opening paragraph and mark the rest of the essay against it.
